The BEST smell in the world

It all started a weekend or two ago, with a short conversation about Cinnabun.

Which evolved into a small craving.

Which grew and grew the longer I sat in church.

Which then exploded into an extremely long baking project.

Ok. Not really extremely long. But when you are craving a cinnamon roll the last thing you want to do is wait for dough to rise.

I wish I could say I came up with this delicious recipe myself, but I found it on allrecipes.com(one of my favorite recipe sites). There may have been walnuts and raisins involved in different stages of this recipe, but I choose to leave them out.

We started by putting the dough ingredients into the bread machine. These were the ingredients for the dough: 1 c warm milk, 2 Tb butter, 2 Tb sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, 3 1/3 cup flour, and 1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast.

This is Pasha's machine that none of us had ever tried using before (I used to make bread in my family's one, but its been awhile. Taylor and I managed to figure it out pretty easily. I can see why it was my kid cooking job now; the whole process is pretty simple).

After we put stuff in we saw the time come up for the cycle: 1 minute and 30 seconds? That seems abnormally fast. Oh, they mean 1 hour and 30 minutes. Got it. At first we kept taking peeks at the machine to see what it was doing (as if that would make it go any faster). Then we just watched 30 rock.

Then I made this sauce stuff for the bottom of the cinnamon roll pan (which will come later). I put 1/3 cup butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 2 Tablespoons milk in a sauce pan and melted it together.

Once it was ready we rolled it out and brushed it with melted butter (1/4 c). Then we sprinkled cinnamon (2 tsp) and brown sugar (1/2 c) all over. I decide to be fancy and add nutmeg, but went a little bit overboard. It smelled very nutmeg-gy. Be careful if you decide to add that stuff!

Then we rolled it up tight (see all that cinnamon-y goodness oozing out?). And cut it up. Which was an adventure. We tried doing with dental floss like they suggested but it never quite did the trick. We ended up making it work with a plain old knife.

We placed them in a 9 x 13 pan with the brown sugar/butter sauce in the bottom.

Then they went into the oven, and...

Ta da! Scrumptious cinnamon rolls.

The recipe suggests flipping the pan over so the rest of the brown sugar/butter sauce as the bottom drips on the rolls. But when we made ours the bottom absorbed most of the sauce (which made it very yummy and moist). Instead we whipped some powdered sugar and milk together for frosting, and then got to eating.

It was midnight by the time we finished, but trust me no one regretted it.

And then the next weekend ... we made them again! We had a much better idea of what we were doing so it got done a bit faster with less complications (I stayed far away from the nutmeg). Plus we had more friends helping :)

Markus Zusak

Sometimes life is discouraging. But sometimes you have amazing days that make your week.

Mind you I didn't get half the things I needed to done today. I didn't finish my research paper draft. Or get that book I needed for my reading assignment. Or work as much as I wanted. And my room still looks like it was possibly looted and abandoned. But I had an amazing day.

I got to see Markus Zusak at the Provo City Library. And it was awesome.

He was so nice, humble, grateful, and down to earth. He told a couple great stories, gave advice for writers, and did an amazing reading from a section of the Book Thief (in his Australian accent no less). They also let people from the audience ask questions at the end. I seriously came home and wrote down everything.

I went with my friends Emma, Megan, and Elliot. Megan, Emma, and I entertained each other while we waited in line for the signing. There was much fun involved :)

We waited for a couple hours to see him and have him sign our books, but it was worth it. I got my copy around 11:00 at night and there was still a lot of people waiting. Even though he must have been exhausted he talked to everyone, and didn't just sign his name. He wrote inscriptions and even added little doodles (he said my copy had the dubious distinction of having his worst drawing on it lol). He wouldn't even eat (they tried to bring him pizza and rootbeer).

I can't wait to read more of this books (I've only read Book Thief). If you haven't read Book Thief yet I highly recommend it.

Check out my friend Emma's blog post on the night. She actually wrote a detailed account of our amazing adventure.

Here is a really blurry picture of him (at the time I would have tried to get another picture, but I thought it came out clear, oh well)

Here is a clear picture from Google. It's a bit more real to life :)

Free books. Seriously, what could be better?

I was all annoyed about having to wake up early (yes 7 am is early for me, morning people don't complain) and then I found out about an amazing book giveaway. Totally turned my day around :) Let's hope my day stays this way :)

And in the Morning I'm Making Waffles

Ok so here is that waffle post I've been going on about. But seriously, these waffles are sooo good. Make them. Trust me.

I converted this recipe from a European recipe (find the original here).

Some of the measurements come out kind of weird. We were lucky enough to have a French measuring cup, which saved us some hassle. But I've made sure to convert everything for this recipe!

I loved making these waffles. Emily and I made them together and reminisced over traveling to Bruges (I took a trip their one weekend while I was on my study abroad program in Paris).Plus the waffles themselves were delicious.

Ingredients:

Sift the flour into a bowl: make a well in the middle.

Melt the butter over hot water or in the microwave. Allow to cool to lukewarm.

Beat the eggs well: add the butter and the yeast: mix well. Add the water and mix again.

This is what it looks like when you use the sparkling water.

We had some extra which we decided to drink. I didn't like this kind of water at first, but after I had it in France a few times I really started to like it.

Add to the flour along with the granulated sugar and vanilla or other seasoning (cinnamon works well).

Beat the dough for at least ten minutes. It will probably be sticky and difficult to work with. This is normal.

After this beating, allow to stand and rise in a warm place for 15-30 minutes.

5 to 10 minutes before baking, add the pearl sugar. I didn't have pearl sugar, so I just crushed up sugar cubes into smaller pieces and mixed those in.

Heat the waffle iron. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto each quarter or section of the waffle iron. Bake until well browned.

Serve hot off the iron, dusted with confectioner's sugar, or top with whipped cream or ice cream if desired. Emily made a cookie spread out of Speculoos cookies we had leftover from a creme brulee recipe we did earlier this semester. It tasted delicious.

Many waffles were enjoyed by all :)

We even made a baby waffle when the dough didn't work out evenly. We didn't want to waste a bit!

To My Fellow Readers

I finally joined BookReads! I'd heard of it before, but I'd never taken the time to check it out. My friend Emma suggested I join. I can't wait to explore the site. I love talking about books so this should be fun.

Although I think I'm going to have to get tougher about rating things. I noticed that in the initial ratings they have you do when you sign up I kept leaving a row of stars blank rather than rate a book low. It's like I was worried about hurting the book's feelings. lol.

This has also prompted me to think of some of my favorite YA and Middle Grade books:

The Wanderer, Sharon Creech (I haven't read this in years, but when I first read this something stuck with me. I read it over and over)
Princess Diaries, Meg Cabot
Ella Enchanted, Gail Carson Levine
Holes, Louis Sachar
Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli
Face on A Milk Carton, Caroline B. Cooney (I suppose this falls under that last category, but this one I was really into) All mystery books really; I don't think I ever got over my Nancy Drew phase.
Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling
Blue Sword/ The Hero and The Crown ( I don't really love rereading these, but I remember being so enthralled when I first read them)
The Truth About Forever, Sarah Dessen
Christmas in Heaven, Carol Lynch Williams (I read this before I took her class, and I just adored it)
Everything is Fine, Ann Dee Ellis (So sad. So good.)

Oh, and now time for some shameless promotion.

I love reading. This you know. If you didn't know it, you probably got it loud and clear after reading my enthusiasm about GoodReads.

I also love reading Throwing Up Words, a blog with Ann Dee Ellis and Carol Lynch Williams (wonderful people and authors who I am lucky enough to know in real life). You might have noticed it on my sidebar before (TUW, netflix, and the artorialist are my favorite forms of internet procrastination). Anyway, TUW has introduced me to a book blog that looks like a lot of fun. It's called Room on the Shelf (http://cherylynne.blogspot.com/) and Cherylyee (blogger in charge) happens to be having a big fat giveaway (50 books up for grabs and you can enter multiple times, for posting links and stuff like that). I mean really who doesn't love a free book?

So heads up fellow readers.

I've also become recently obsessed with finding authors and book twitter feeds. I used to get really bored with twitter, but following the right people makes all the difference.

So what have you all been reading? Any favorite books you want to reminisce on? Or suggestions for my first GoodReads review?

You're my girl, what the doctor ordered, So sweet, you make my mouth water

A little bit ago my relief society had a candy making activity. I'd never used candy molds before and didn't realize how simple it was! Melt. Pour. Freeze. Eat. Much fun was had by all.

P.S. There is always some part of me that will think of Aaron Carter when someone says I want Candy. I don't believe I'm alone in this problem.

Yet whenever I try to sing this I can think of two lines max ("I like Candy when it's wrapped in a sweater..." yeah I had to google to do this post title).

Melted chocolate/vanilla bark? It came in little colored tablets.

My wonderful roommate Katie!

Some people got fancy and mixed or swirled colors. Here someone is making a blue and red flower.

Then we pour the chocolate in and add the lollipop sticks.

A little bit later...

Finished products!

I love the roses.

Look we made little baby ones too!
